About

PASSION FOR SOUND SINCE 1986

As with many engineers, founder/engineer David Roof's fascination with sound came in high school while discovering music from the Beatles to Wynton Marsalis. The range of sounds coming out in the 1980s as he was growing up was amazing. The Beatles "Recording Sessions" book came out teasing what was possible in the studio. From modest beginnings of bouncing sound back and forth between two cassette decks with a Radio Shack mixer and microphone grew over the last 30+ years to today's ever growing arsenal of ProTools and reel to reel tape.

David's background includes classical training at the University of Michigan School of Music. He has been an in demand performer on bass, guitar, and more. Classical training, with thousands of hours sitting literally in the middle of a Symphony Orchestra, ears are trained and attuned to the smallest nuance of musical tone, expression and blend. Great recordings are only possible with a mental image of what great tones should sound like. With decades of performance with groups from symphony orchestras, to pop, jazz and Americana, his insight into making great bands is invaluable to coaching bands, making people comfortable and capturing the emotion of your songs.

David's reputation is for an easy going, positive vibe in the studio. Fast setups and editing with techniques for coaxing the best performance with the least frustration are his hallmark. The focus is always on realizing and developing your vision of your songs and sound. Rooftop is known for organic tones, live band recording, a fabulous sounding room, songwriter's production, and vintage or modern sonic approaches.
